Wildlife Exposed Photography

A Bridge Between Technology and the Wilderness
Welcome to the world of wildlife photography by Sam Lantz. With over 40 years of experience, I have journeyed from the craftsmanship of the analog darkroom to the absolute cutting edge of modern technology.

My path began in an era when every frame was a struggle against low light and the limitations of film. However, it is through the digital revolution – and specifically mirrorless technology – that I have finally been able to realize my vision: capturing genuinely authentic moments of our most elusive wild animals without disturbing them.

My Philosophy: Knowledge Over the Hunt
I do not believe in "hunting" wild animals for a photograph. Instead, my method is built upon patient studies of animal behavior in their natural habitats. By understanding the terrain and anticipating their movements, I choose my compositions long in advance. I position myself strategically and wait – sometimes for hours, sometimes for days – until the animal naturally steps into my prepared frame.

Technology as an Enabler
Where analog technology once set boundaries, I now utilize a sophisticated network of tools to document the hidden life of the forest:

• Mirrorless Systems: For the completely silent shutter that allows me to sit just meters away from a hunting fox, or observe wolves at close range without them ever sensing my presence.

• Thermal Cameras: Used as a research tool to study the nocturnal behaviors of deer, fox, and pine marten, revealing heat signatures that the human eye would otherwise miss.

• Infrared Cameras: To explore aesthetic expressions and document wildlife beyond the visible spectrum.

Diplomacy and Respect in the Field
My work extends beyond the camera bag. I value strong relationships with local landowners and hunters through the exchange of information and mutual respect. At the same time,
I am deeply committed to the integrity of the animals; I keep my most sensitive observations to myself to protect the predators I document—whether it be a wolf navigating the edges of its territory or the elusive lynx by the stone wall.

The Goal: Preserving the Moment
For me, the experience in the forest – the total silence and the physical presence – is always what matters most. But with an archive filled with unique encounters, from close-range wolves to the acrobatics of the pine marten in the canopy, I have a growing ambition to compile these experiences into a book. It will be a story of patience, technical evolution, and, above all, a tribute to the hidden inhabitants of the Swedish wilderness.
